Syllabus

Day 1: Measuring time, tithi, vaar, nakshatra

  • What is where on a Panchang page
  • Shalivahan Shaka, the 60-year samvatsar cycle, ayana, six seasons, twelve months, amant vs purnimant
  • Tithi: the Sun-Moon gap, 30 tithi names, the five groups, udaya tithi, kshaya and vriddhi tithi
  • Vaar: sunrise to sunrise and how it differs from the calendar date
  • Nakshatra: the 27 nakshatras, their lords, janma nakshatra

Day 2: Yoga, karana, reading times, Rahu kaal, practice

  • Yoga: the Sun + Moon sum, 27 yogas, the 9 usually avoided
  • Karana: half a tithi, movable and fixed karanas, Vishti (Bhadra)
  • Reading times: the time shown is the end time; ghati-pal conversion
  • Sunrise, sunset and Rahu kaal for your own town
  • Practice: everyone reads a full day's Panchang and fills the sample; Guruji checks each one
